Jewish Christian School – an oxymoron?

…not if you’re in an inter-faith marriage trying to raise informed, happy, thoughtful, educated, spiritual, respectful children who are grateful for their blessings (big and small) and who see the ‘bigger picture’ and know the importance of giving – of their time and talents to others in their home, neighborhood, town, state, country and world.

So where is a young couple to start after they’ve met, fallen in love, and decided to get married?

There are a million-and-one books about interfaith marriage…and that’s a good place to start.  However, the most encouraging source of information are other inter-faith couples who have ‘made it work’ and raised successful, well-adjusted children.

There are also inter-faith groups with great resources.  Our greatest resource was Dovetail, but there are local groups for inter-faith couples in cities all over the country.  You can e-mail Dovetail for more info.

Unfortunately, there was not a group in our community.  So, we made one.

We were lucky enough to be able to attend an inter-faith conference in a city 3 hours from our house.  We were SURE that we would meet other young couples who were looking for answers at this conference.

The information that we heard that weekend was invaluable; especially the testimonials from children who were raised attending an inter-faith Sunday school.  Unfortunately, we didn’t find ONE couple all weekend that had made the 3 hour trip from our city…..UNTIL the LAST session of the weekend.

As all of the attendees were going around the table introducing themselves, the LAST couple to be introduced…. were from our city!  When the session was over, we promptly accosted the couple and told them they were our new best friends.

Lucky for us, they were not scared away.  This is the couple with whom we have started our Jewish Christian School.

Jewish Christian School meets every other Sunday morning and we cover lots of different topics from the very basics (Mom is Methodist, Dad is Jewish,  we are all children of God…and what does that mean), to “Why is it important to give our talents and resources to help others”, to all of the holidays (and there are a LOT of holidays!).
